The statue that has stood for 97 years on the front lawn of the Franklin County Courthouse, was destroyed Thursday evening when a Chevy S10 pickup traveling south on Main Street veered into the north bound lane then onto the sidewalk striking a fire hydrant then continuing south onto the courthouse lawn striking the 97 year old statue. The statue was knocked off its foundation and came crashing down to the ground in several pieces. After hitting the statue the pickup truck continued across the lawn and came to rest against one of the supporting columns of the court house.

No information was available at the scene regarding the condition of the driver of the pickup, other than he was visiting relatives living in Rocky Mount.
