Franklin Heights Baptist Church presented the 2008 Strawberry Festival on the Farmer's Market in Rocky Mount.
May 9, 2008 – Downtown Rocky Mount at the Farmer’s Market was the place to be Friday night. Franklin Heights Baptist Church hosted their annual Strawberry Festival. Strawberries are vine ripened this time of year in Franklin County and there are plenty to be had. Free ice cream smothered in strawberries, cotton candy, cola and much more were available for all that attended. Bluegrass and spiritual music were provided to entertain the crowd that swelled to approximately 1,000. Children had fun receiving face paintings and tattoos, even if they did have to wait a while in long lines.
The weather cooperated in making this a perfect evening. This was in sharp contrast to the weather that Franklin County experienced less than 24 hours earlier. Severe thunderstorms moved across the area producing torrential rains, intense lightning, and hail and spawning at least one tornado in Franklin County which has been confirmed by the National Weather Service. Severe weather is never welcomed but the rain will help to keep the water table up which should make for an interesting Pigg River Ramble which is coming up on Saturday June 7th.
