The morning started off overcast and light fog. By race time, the fog had lifted. A light breeze with a nip of Fall was in the air. This made it tough to leave the 78 degree water temperature and head for the bikes to begin that part of the course.
The bikes got off to a quick start thanks to the temperatures holding on to their morning lows. But by the time the first bike returned the heat was already on the rise.
The day was not totally without its troubles. One biker became disoriented within the parking lot maze and unintentionally took a shortcut. The officials were quick to set things straight.
The big upset was suffered by the collegiate competitor that could not find his running shoes. Desperately looking for a pair of size 10.5 shoes, and shouting a few exclamations he began to realize that his day would be lost.
The first runner crossed the finish line approximately 2 hours after the start of the race (actual elapsed time not available at the time this article was written). As expected, John Huddleston, with Moneta Rescue, had to provide onsite first aid to some individuals that pushed their bodies beyond their limits.
Mike Owens of Georgetown University needed extensive care at the finish line. Emergency personnel on the scene worked with him about 15 minutes to assist him in recovering from the race.
All in all it was a wonderful day for a triathlon. Everyone had a great time. Outback Steak House provided an excellent selection of food. Set Up Inc made sure the event ran flawlessly. Look for the photo gallery of this event to be posted here within the next week.
