FCHS Indoor Track and Field Team Qualifies for Regional Competition in Maryland

The Franklin County High School Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Teams each earned third place finishes at the Western Valley District Championship February 9th  at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. E.C. Glass boys and girls teams each earned the first place championships. Qualifying members of the Franklin County High School team will be traveling to Maryland to compete in the regional competition February 23rd.

Senior Erin Patterson continued her domination of the pole vault event earning the championship for the third consecutive year. She set a new record of 11 ft 3 inches, breaking the 10 ft 6 inch record she established at last year’s championship. Fellow senior Jasmine Hariston earned the championship in the triple jump competition with a distance of 35 ft 10 inches.

In the high jump competition, FCHS earned three places with Shaundra Cook taking a second  place honor by jumping 5 ft 2 inches, and Jasmine Hariston and Brandy Preston securing the third and fifth place positions . Cook also earned a second place honor in the long jump competition with a jump of 16 ft 11 inches as well as qualifying for regional competition in the 55 meter hurdles event. Preston also earned a sixth place finish in the shot put event with a throw of 30 ft 9 inches.

The girls track events had a strong showing with junior Kaleigh Wood earning a second place finish in the 1,000 meter run in 3:14.86; Sara Beach finished fourth with a time of 3:35.02.

The 800 meter relay team with Autumn Watson, Brittany Mattox, Jelesa Anthony and Erin Patterson finished fifth in 2:10.15. The 1,600 meter relay team with Faatimah Ziglar, Diamond Ponder, Hariston and Patterson earned a fourth place finish with a time of 5:23.78. The girls 3,200 meter relay team wrapped up the girl’s events for the day with a third place finish in a time of 11:16.79. The 3,200 meter relay team members are Amanda Spero, Hannah Flanders, Sarah Beach and Kalee Seneff.

The FCHS boy’s team had a strong showing as well. Junior Justin Seay earned championships in both the 300 meter dash and the long jump. He had a sixth place finish in the 55 meter dash.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Marvin Nall finished third with a time of 8.68 seconds and Dustin Gantt came in fifth at 9.30 seconds.

Aaron Waters earned a third place finish in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:47.89 and a sixth place finish in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:01.05. Corey Duncan earned a second place finish in the 500 meter event with a time of 1:16.12 while Jonathan LaBarge earned a third place finish in the 1,000 meter run.

The boys 800 meter relay team of Dustin Gantt, Markel Preston, Justin Seay and Marvin Nall earned a fourth place finish with a time of 1:41.51. The 1,600 meter relay team of David Brengel, Corey Duncan, Bobby Taylor and Justin Crews earned a third place finish with a time of 4:00.08. The 3,200 meter relay team of Jonathan LaBarge, David Brengel, T.J. Nichols and Corey Duncan earned a third place finish with a time of 9:08.46.

Representing FCHS in the boys field events, Sam Wright finished fifth in a field of eight in the pole vault event with a jump height of 10 ft 6 inches. In the triple jump Bobby Taylor, Markel Preston and Dustin Gantt earned third, fourth and fifth place finishes with jump distances of 42 ft 8 3/4 inches, 40 ft 8 3/4 inches and 39 1/4 ft respectively.

In the shot put competition, Marcus Burwell earned second place honors with a throw of 45 ft 11 inches. Robert Weaver and Jonathan Wade earned fifth and sixth place finishes with throws of 41 ft 1 inch and 39 ft 10 ½ inches.

Congratulations to Coaches Poindexter, Johnson, Jones and Snidow and to all the members of the Franklin County High School Indoor Track and Field Team. We wish them good luck as they travel to compete in Maryland!
