Franklin County Parks and Recreation hosts Heritage Fishing Day at Waid Park.
Rain during the early morning hours did not stop Heritage Fishing Day activities from being held at Waid Park in conjunction with the opening day of trout season. Clouds maintained their presence throughout the day but the rain cleared prior to the official start of trout season at 9:00 AM. Pigg River, which winds its way through the park, was well stocked with trout. Most anglers caught fish and a few maxed out with their limit of six trout.
Both rainbow and brown trout were taken. While brown trout are known for their size, the largest fish of the day was a 6 lb 8 oz rainbow landed by 15 year old Chelsea Furrow. In addition to this being the largest fish of the day, it was the first trout Chelsea has ever caught. Unfortunately for Chelsea, as most trout anglers can attest, it is mostly downhill from there.
Franklin County Parks and Recreation Department provided a free pizza lunch at 11:00 AM and raffled prizes to all of those in attendance at the designated shelter. This was an excellent finish to the morning of the opening day of trout season.
